Essential Equipment
- French press (any size works)
- Freshly roasted coffee beans
- Burr grinder (recommended for consistent grind size)
- Kettle for heating water
- Timer (phone works perfectly)
- Scale (for precision) or measuring spoons
- Wooden or plastic stirring utensil (metal can crack glass presses)
Step-by-Step Brewing Guide
- Heat Water (0:00)
- Bring water to a boil, then let it cool for 30 seconds to reach optimal brewing temperature (195-205°F/90-96°C)
- While water heats, grind your coffee to a coarse consistency (like sea salt or breadcrumbs)
- Preheat & Prepare (1:00)
- Rinse your French press with hot water to preheat it
- Add your ground coffee to the empty press
- Give it a gentle shake to level the coffee bed
- First Pour & Bloom (1:30)
- Start your timer and pour enough water to saturate all grounds (about twice the coffee weight)
- Gently stir to ensure all grounds are wet
- Let it "bloom" for 30-45 seconds. This releases CO₂ gases for better extraction
- Main Pour & Steep (2:00)
- Add the remaining water, pouring steadily
- Place the lid on top with the plunger fully raised
- Let steep undisturbed for 4 minutes total (adjust to taste)
- Break the Crust (3:30)
- At 3:30, gently stir the top layer (or "crust") of grounds
- Remove any floating foam and grounds with a spoon for a cleaner cup
- Press & Serve (4:00)
- Slowly press the plunger down with steady pressure (15-20 seconds)
- Pour immediately into preheated mugs
- Enjoy while fresh. Don't leave coffee in the press as it will continue extracting
Troubleshooting Your Brew
Problem | Likely Cause | Solution |
---|---|---|
Bitter taste | Over-extraction or too fine grind | Reduce steep time to 3:30 or use coarser grind |
Weak/sour taste | Under-extraction or too coarse grind | Extend steep time to 4:30 or use slightly finer grind |
Too much sediment | Grind too fine or pressing too quickly | Use coarser grind and press plunger more slowly |
Difficult to press | Grind too fine | Use coarser grind setting |
Lukewarm coffee | Cold press or cups | Preheat press and cups with hot water before brewing |
Pro Tips for French Press Excellence

- Measure precisely: Coffee scales ensure consistency between brews
- Grind fresh: Grind beans just before brewing for maximum flavor
- Pour immediately: Transfer all coffee to a carafe if not serving right away
